Final report on Contract No 7210-PR/060, 1 July 1997 to 31 December 2000.

A completely new fire safety concept has been developed in the scope of previous ECSC research (CEC Agreement 7210-SA/522). The concept, based on both natural fire instead of the ISO curve and the active fire safety measures, is a global approach which also includes the safety of people. This approach is going to strongly improve the competitiveness of steel buildings because it allows for the reduction or avoidance of insulating material costs. So steel buildings will be more economical and safety will be quantified in a more realistic, more consistent and reliable way.

The innovations of this first piece of research are:
- to evaluate the resistance of the whole structure instead of single elements;
- to replace the ISO heating by natural fire evolution;
- to consider that a natural fire may be only localised;
- to take into account the effect of active fire fighting measures;
- to define a credible approach for fire requirement.

Some full-scale tests, in small compartments and in larger compartments, were also undertaken in order to verify the natural fire curves, to validate the formula for temperature determination, and to check the models of fire spread and smoke development. The results will allow the natural fire safety concept to be implemented in the Eurocodes, and to be used as a practical design tool by engineering offices.
