Implementation of regional burnt area algorithms for the GBA2000 initiative

Project ID: 1972
Funded under: FP5-JRC

As part of the Global Environment Information System (GEIS) project organised by the JRC Global Vegetation Monitoring Unit, the Global Burnt Area 2000 (GBA2000) initiative involves the analysis of global Earth Observation (EO) data for inventory of vegetation fires and for mapping of areas burnt. A satellite image archive from the VEGA 2000 dataset, covering the period November 1999 to December 2000, was made available for the purposes of the GBA2000 initiative.

This report provides detailed information and instructions on technical and computational aspects of GBA2000. The methods adopted to process the global daily dataset of SPOT Vegetation S1 images for the year 2000 are presented. The report does not present any analysis, assessment or interpretation of the final results, since this information is contained in accompanying non-technical reports. Annexes provide the text of all the programs and tools developed during the project.
