Wind erosion on agricultural land in Europe: Research results for land managers

Project ID: EVK2-CT-2001-60002
Funded under: FP5-EESD

This booklet is intended to describe where, when and under what circumstances of land use, wind erosion can occur, what effects it has, on-site and off-site, and what can be done about it. The publication is one of the outcomes of three EC funded projects. Two of these are research projects: WELSONS (Wind Erosion and Loss of Soil Nutrients I semi-arid Spain) and WEELS (Wind Erosion on European Light Soils), and one was an accompanying measure ECOWEAL (European Conference on Wind Erosion on Agricultural Land).

The booklet covers the practical or applied implications of these projects along with a wider survey of the relevant literature, including Australian and US experience. The objective is to present the main issues that need to be considered by policy-makers and those who direct research on these matters in Europe. It concludes with a the summary of a discussion held at the end of the ECOWEAL conference, in which participants brought together ideas about the steps forward for European research into and policy about wind erosion.
