Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

This multinational project involved the partners Corus UK Ltd, Centrum voor Research in de Metallurgie (CRM), Rheinisch Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH-IBF), Institut de Recherches de la Sidérurgie Française (IRSID) and Thyssen Krupp Stahl (TKS). The project was coordinated by TKS.

Pilot twin roll casters at Corus, IRSID and IBF were used directly to produce thin steel strips of different steel grades.

Corus aimed to produce low carbon steel strips from which suitable samples for conversion into tubular or hollow sections would be selected. Properties of the as-cast strip and the resulting product were assessed and compared with those from a conventional process route. IRSID investigations aimed at getting a better surface quality of the direct cast low carbon strips, and as a result no microcracks on the strip.

The RWTH-IBF focused on the investigation of low micro-alloyed low carbon steels and high strength steel grades. The casters of the TKS located at the IBF are equipped with a cooling facility and an in-line rolling stand. TKS assessed the properties of these strips with respect to suitability for direct application. The properties of the strips were characterised and evaluated. Fixing parts were manufactured to demonstrate the potential for direct application and an erosion test showed the potential of high strength steel for wear resistant applications.

CRM evaluated the strip properties supplied by Corus, IRSID and IBF/TKS. The investigation was carried out under a quality assurance scheme according to EN 450001 and Beltest rules.
