In this project, new concepts for the design of easily built composite bridges have been developed which can be executed by the main contractor without problems on site. The composite bridge concepts being developed cover the span range of about 15 to 50m, to extend the traditional span lengths of composite bridges for small and medium spans. Therefore, the new concepts cover about 75% of all span requirements for road bridges.

Particular features of these new concepts are the sufficient robustness for execution, cost effectiveness, durability in use and a minimum of construction time realised by the following means:
- On-site construction problems are avoided by applying lightweight steel elements (e.g. hybrid girders) that can easily be mounted by mobile cranes without propping and do not need welding on site;
- Use of alternative levels of prefabrication of concrete slabs: fully and partially prefabricated elements.

The performed test programme for the investigations has been divided into five main working items:
- Serviceability limits and fatigue for hybrid girders;
- Static and dynamic push-out tests of studs of 25 mm and dismountable shear connectors;
- Behaviour of joints of slabs for full and partial prefabricated elements;
- Fatigue tests on special joints in the span and on the middle support of composite girders;
- Plate buckling for slender and stocky webs of steel and composite girders.

Furthermore, software for the pre-design of composite bridges has been developed which has been introduced in a design guide for composite bridges.
