Five separate activities associated with sinter production and quality have been undertaken. Within the project, all of the activities concentrated on process control issues and comprised evaluations and improvements to existing systems, the development of new control strategies and closed loop controllers. The work done has improved operating practices and generated a better understanding of the input mechanisms required to effectively control output and quality. The new control strategies that have been developed together with the equipment implemented have improved the management of the sinter plants involved in the project - in the case of VDEh-BFI, HKM�s sinter plant was involved.

Burn-through point management across and along the strand, the development of an on-strand permeameter, automation of coke additions and application of advanced control strategies formed individual work packages, which were executed by the various partners using approaches. The techniques used to develop control and overall management of the sintering process were of both the fuzzy and traditional types. A Matlab/Simulink environment was used for modelling. Software applications were also developed to help operators in decision-making. New measurement techniques were also implemented on the sinter plant. The most noteworthy measurements used are measurement of on-strand permeability, mix cold permeability, BRP along and across the strand, bed height, IR analysis of mix moisture, Ramsey coil output to measure FeO content of the sintered bed and image analysis of the bed cross-section. Several pieces of equipment for process management have been installed.
