GLC 2000. Global Land Cover mapping for the year 2000: Project status November 2002

Project ID: 1972
Funded under: FP5-JRC

A new Global Land Cover database for the year 2000 is being produced by an international partnership of about 30 research groups co-ordinated by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. The database contains land cover maps with detailed, regionally relevant map legends and a global product that combines all regional classes in one consistent legend. Each continent is dealt with as a separate region, and some sub-continental areas are also treated as such. The land cover maps are based on daily S1 data from the VEGETATION sensor on-board SPOT 4 acquired between 01 November 1999 and 31 December 2000.

The VEGETATION programme partners have made this data set available as part of their "VEGA 2000" initiative, VEGETATION data for Global Assessment. In addition data from other sensors (ATSR, JERS, ERS and DMSP) have been used to solve specific problems, in particular in regions with persistent cloud cover, especially in equatorial regions and for identification of urban areas. Detailed legend definition, image classification and map quality assurance are carried out region-by-region.

A statistically valid accuracy assessment will be performed on the final global product. At the time of preparation of this report, S. America, Africa, Northern Eurasia, insular SE Asia and China have been completed and are available for peer review and validation, Northern America, Europe, Southern Asia and Australia are in the final stage of production, and the other regions are in progress. Data and information update may be found on the GLC 2000 web pages at
