Implementing the GIS elements of the Water Framework Directive

Project ID: 39
Funded under: FP5-JRC

The EU Member States, Norway and the European Commission have jointly adopted a common strategy for supporting the implementation of Directive 2000/60/EC (the Water Framework Directive). One objective of this strategy is the development of practical guidance documents on various technical issues of the Directive. In this context, a working group dedicated to the development of technical specifications for implementing a Geographical Information System for the reporting needs of the Directive has been established, and is known as GIS-WG. The present guidance document is the outcome of this working group, and contains the synthesis of the output of the GIS-WG activities and discussions. It focuses on the implementation of the Directive's GIS elements in the broader context of the development of integrated river basin management plans as required by the Directive.
