Five electric arc furnaces of different mechanical and electrical design were involved in the project. Profilarbed Recherches investigated the 155 t/140 MVA DC single shell furnace in Belval, the 155 t/140 MVA DC twin shell furnace in Differdange and the 95 t/105 MVA AC double shaft furnace in Schifflange. Centre de Recherches Métallurgiques investigated the 160 t/110 MVA DC finger shaft furnace with hot metal pouring of Cockerill Sambre in Marcinelle. Feralpi Siderurgica investigated their 75 t/70 MVA AC single shell furnace. Several modifications of the equipment and the operating practices contributed to reduce the electrical energy consumption and to increase the productivity of the furnaces.

Betriebsforschungsinstitut analysed a large amount of performance and consumption data from each of the five furnaces and improved the previously developed formula for calculating the electrical energy demand. With this, effects of different operating conditions can be eliminated in comparing the performance of two furnaces or in evaluating performance deviations at a furnace. The calculation of electrode graphite demand has been improved by introducing the influence of post-combustion oxygen on the side oxidation rate.
