The future of manufacturing in Europe 2015-2020 : The challenge for sustainability. Scenario report (summary)

Project ID: G1MA-CT-2001-00010
Funded under: FP5-GROWTH

This summary report presents the main results of the scenario exercise organised in the framework of the project "The Future of Manufacturing in Europe 2015-2020 - The Challenge for Sustainable Development" (FutMan). In four different scenarios the summary report highlights important socio-economic and technological trends, possible trend-breaks, critical challenges and possible opportunities. Each scenario is illustrated in form of a fictional 2016 business newspaper front page. The main conclusion the report draws from the scenario exercise is that progress towards sustainable development in manufacturing will depend on the successful alignment of technological, economic, organisational, political and broader societal factors that are required for 'system change' towards sustainability.
