Interlaboratory radiochemical analysis comparison on a primary waste flux

The objective of the project was to perform an interlaboratory radiochemical analysis campaign on the destructive measurement of radiotoxic and long-Iived radionuclides in a primary waste flux. Two different waste streams samples, under consortium agreement, were analysed: one spent cation exchange resin and one evaporator concentrate. Representative samples of the resin and concentrate were homogenised, sorted, prepared and distributed under the responsibility of El Cabril-ENRESA. The analyses of the different radionuclides were carried out in the laboratories belonging to the different contractors with their own procedures on a routine base. The nuclides analysed were (3)H, (14)C, (55)Fe, (63)Ni, (89/90)Sr, (99)Tc (129)I, (238)Pu, (239/40)Pu, (241)PU, (241)Am, (242)Cm, (244)Cm, (234)U and 238(U). The results were reported in a spreadsheet, giving the specific activities in sample material, the confidence levels and the uncertainties due to statistics and processes. A full description of all-destructive techniques, separation procedures and measurement techniques used for the analyses of the different alpha, beta and gamma emitting radionuclides were reported. The results were sent to the CIEMAT where the statistical evaluation was carried out. The statistical approach has been fully described and is based on the evaluation of all quantitative and measured parameters. The results obtained were discussed and problems and discrepancies reviewed after detailed examination of the experimental data and the radioanalytical procedures and techniques. The exchange of views on radio analytical procedures can provide the platform for a consensus on the qualification of the methods used by each participating laboratory. It will enable, where necessary, each laboratory to effectively review and modify or transform its procedures.
