This research project was aimed to diagnose online the possible causes of failures of thickness quality in the products manufactured in hot strip mills. It was oriented to install, complete and improve a laboratory prototype developed under the Esprit 8169 project, and validated by simulation techniques.

First efforts were devoted to the reforms and installation of the data acquisition system, and then the research work was carried out in several complementary ways:
- making an assessment of the laboratory prototype after its integration in the real mill, in order to improve it, allowing its industrial exploitation;
- improving the mathematical models used in the system, including autotuning;
- evaluating important aspects not previously considered in the system, such as the influence of roll wearing or thermal crown;
- improving the spectral estimator and pattern recognition techniques used in the system;
- considering different possibilities to reduce the influence of faulty rolls (draft redistribution);
- developing a strategy to exploit the information generated by the current system in the mill: graphical interface, reverse engineering system and database.

The system introduced a new helpful tool to detect the faulty roll in the periodic thickness defects. This also helps to quantify the effect of the problem and indicate if it is worth making the roll change.
