From its beginning, this project was conceived as practice oriented. Indeed, it was aimed at improving and implementing knowledge in the field of lateral torsional buckling {LTB) and at extending the application of existing standards to a wider range of beam types. Partially encased composite beams, steel castellated beams, web tapered I steel beams and erection phases of steel bridge girders of uniform section are particularly concerned. For that purpose, as well, analytical, experimental and numerical investigations were conducted as parametric studies.

The determination of the elastic LTB critical moment, the determination of which is a key step in the verification process, becomes rapidly complex when loading, supports and possible restraints diverge from ideal conditions. Therefore, dedicated software, which is henceforth freely available, was developed to make analytical formulation unnecessary. How to assess the ultimate LTB moment resistance is revisited and significantly improved in several respects. Application of the design process is illustrated through several fully solved applications. Also, recommendations are given on how to perform FE analyses of complex situations involving LTB.

This final report consists of three separate parts, which address respectively the funding body, the designers and the researchers. The second part in particular, which looks like a user's guide, provides a physical background on LTB, detailed guidance to designers, efficient design tools, improved design procedure and fully documented worked examples.
