In the context of the Sixth Framework Programme, the EC is developing a broader vision on e-Infrastructure. One of the main goals is to create on top of the pan- European network for research GÉANT, another pan-European infrastructure which is based on Grids-architectures. While GÉANTs main objective is connectivity, the Grids infrastructure will focus on processing of information.

This paper, by Ian Butterworth, The Blackett Laboratory, Imperial College, London, UK, is a contribution to the publication "Changing the way research is done: The user perspective on eInfrastructure", whose aim is to inform users of the broad range of capabilities and benefits of e-Infrastructures, by surveying their current status and by focusing on concrete examples of their use in a wide variety of fields, as described by experts in these fields.
