The mobile phone penetration is reaching saturation in Europe. However the penetration of mobile business solutions (mBusiness) is still very low - less than 5% within the European corporations and organisations. Only the early adopters have deployed smartphones/PDA's into their mobile work processes. Some of these have been very successful because the Return of Investment was quick and competitive advantage was achieved.
The potential market for mBusiness solutions in Europe is more than 10million users in vertical markets segments such as field service, transportation, logistics, sales, utilities, insurance, security, emergency and health care. The mBusiness take off in Europe has been slow because the corporate have postponed their mBusiness investments due the fast network evolution (GSM, HCSD, WAP, GPRS, 3G), the lack of suitable mobile terminals (smartphones and communications enabled Personal Digital Assistants) and due the expensive development of mBusiness solutions as few tools are available to shorten the development cycles. Also the deployment (rollout) can take years for a large mBusiness solution involving thousands of users in multiple countries. This is also the reason why the mBusiness platform has to be independent of the underlying network and terminal technology. mBusiness has also major social and organisational impacts. The goals of mBusiness investment has to be communicated and shared with the users. Also training has to be adequate. Successes of early adopters prove the users do accept the smartphones and the new way to work much better than anticipated
