Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Information Society Technologies for Transport and Mobility, Achievements and ongoing Projects from the Fifth Framework Programme

Funded under: FP5

While new consortia are preparing themselves to start new Research and Technology Development activities under the Sixth Framework Programme, it is important to look at the work that was initiated in the last few years and to take stock of their results and the progress achieved to date.
ICT applications in transport, more commonly known as Transport Telematics, keep fascinating the research community and transport industry, as so many opportunities continue to emerge as Information Technology becomes increasingly accessible and new communication tools are deployed. This field of activity, known as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), aims at the integration of different transport modes to form an efficient and seamless system that enhances safety, promotes a cleaner environment and improves personal and commercial mobility.
This brochure gives the reader a short overview of the research topics that were addressed in Key Action I, Systems and Services for the Citizen related to Transport, as part of the IST Programme under the Fifth Framework Programme for Research and Technology Development. Across the different calls for proposals, a total number of 160 contracts were awarded, with 1291 partner form 989 different organisations involved. The knowledge base built by this large community is extremely valuable. A large number of these projects are listed in this brochure, and the reader will also find a full overview on the CORDIS web site.
