  • TIPIK - Technology and infrastructures policy in the knowledge based-economy - the impact of the tenency towards codification and knowledge, Final report

The TIPIK project relies on the conviction that the acquisition, distribution, and use of knowledge play an increasing role in society. TIPIK concentrates explicitly on one of the specific dimensions of the development of the knowledge-based economy: The fact that the rapid cumulative expansion of the codified knowledgebase is the salient characteristic of the development of a modern economy based on knowledge. In particular, the digital revolution has drastically modified the ways to do research, to conceive new products or processes, to produce standard products and the ways to consume. The fall in the costs of telecommunication has facilitated the diffusion of codified knowledge. Through systems such as the Internet, any piece of codified knowledge has many more potential users. Codified knowledge can now be transmitted over long distances and within complex networks, at a very limited cost and high speed. These changes clearly increase the potential value of codified knowledge, which may make it more attractive to allocate resources to the process of codification. Codification of knowledge directly affects the speeding-up of knowledge creation, innovation and economic change.
