Family and household structure in Europe

A standardized database on the European family has been constructed investigating the conceptual basis of different classification schemes and harmonizing these where possible. Measurement and interpretation of the social and economic impact of changes in the processes of household formation and dissolution is has been undertaken. Particular attention was given to the role of the family and household in hindering the movement of labour between regions with differing employment prospects and to the role of the family in perpetuating social inequalities through the transfer of wealth across generations. Spatial and temporal generations of the residence patterns of young and old, in the frequency of living alone and in the processes by which children leave the parental home, have also been investigated. Appropriate research techniques and methodologies, in particular standardized classification schemes of relationships within households, are being developed.
