The quality of cork and cork stoppers

The project resulted in better understanding of the performance of a cork stopper. All the main parameters and properties which affect the quality of cork stoppers were quantified. It was found that image analysis can be used to quantify cork quality. The effects of the final surface treatments (eg with paraffin and silicon), on the performance of cork stoppers is now better understood. New methods for the bleaching of cork stoppers were developed to avoid the use of chlorine in the washing solution and the recovery of natural cork stoppers was found to be possible. For the first time, isotherms of equilibrium moisture content of cork were obtained.
