Defect detection by digital image processing for computer assisted machining

The project concentrated on the new techniques for the automatic detection of features in sawn wood and on the adaptability of these techniques to the machines manufactured by small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). We developed a range of optical scanners adaptable to different process lines. The first concerns cross cutting lines. After the destacker, the scanner is linked to 1 or 2 crosscut saws. The second range concerns sorting lines with length wide transportation and the third is more adapted to rip sawing lines based on transverse analysis due to the length of pieces. For optical scanners the industrialisation phase is already well advanced and commercial negotiations can be undertaken with customers throughout wood working manufacturers. X-ray systems and ultrasound technique for scanning have also been improved.
