Diesel exhaust after treatment systems

The first efficient model and computer code for the catalytically assisted regeneration of diesel particulate filters (traps) was developed. This computational tool, along with other tools modelling thermal regeneration of traps, exhaust system transient heat transfer, diesel oxidation and lean nitrogen oxide catalysts, support a complete computer aided engineering (CAE) methodology for diesel exhaust systems.

The fuel additive-assisted regeneration of diesel particulate filters is modelled by an innovative approach taking into account the dynamic oxygen storage and release properties of additives. The code may be tuned to the specific characteristics of a variety of catalytic fuel additives, based on the results of full scale experiments. The model allows the comparative assessment of different fuel additives for regeneration assistance, as well as supporting a full CAE methodology with respect to the design optimization of diesel particulate control systems.
