Fuel saving for trawlers

The purpose of the research work was to identify the fuel saving potential for the Portuguese coastal trawl fleet resulting both from changes in the vessel operating conditions and improvements of the fishing gear performance.
The results evidence the good performance of the new EURO0894 trawl which seemed to keep the ability to catch species belonging to the different groups formerly captured, spending less fuel at the same commercial trawl speed, when compared to the old ones.

According to the skippers, this trawl showed a performance that is suitable to their objectives:
The catch composition indicates the trawl ability to capture bottom species and also those species swimming off the bottom such as the horse mackerel. The total catch amount was considered good when compared to the current values obtained with the old trawls.
The new trawl seems to be well adjusted to the vessel. In fact, for the same trawl speed, lower values for the exhaust temperature were found.

Further commercial trials with this trawl showed excellent results and at the moment it is known that a considerable number of trawlers of that size and power have adopted, or intend to adopt, the new EURO0894 trawl. The introduction of the new trawl, associated with the use of suitable speeds, both in trawling and in navigation, leads to an increase in the net cash flow, ranging from 10% to 27% depending on the vessel, when compared to the operating condition usually adopted by the skippers (using the old trawls).
