Toward a stronger European research community

A fellowship programme offers young researchers the opportunity for a successful academic career by encouraging postdoctoral research.
Toward a stronger European research community
The EU-funded project RUBICON II (Rubicon II) dedicated its work to giving early stage researchers a chance to enhance their careers by spending up to two years at a top research institute outside the Netherlands or at a Dutch research institute. Assessment is based on the quality of the applicant, the research proposal and the host institute, and is open to all scientific disciplines.

The programme helps attract researchers to the Netherlands and provides social benefits for outgoing fellows. Researchers are able to broaden and deepen their abilities. Forty-three fellows of the 523 applicants were awarded with a grant; 13 of them were from the humanities and social sciences. Fellows are not obligated to return to Europe but their career steps are monitored after completing the programme. RUBICON II found that 25 fellows already returned to their home country.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has continued the Rubicon programme. Fellows are expected to make use of the results and experiences gained during the project, remaining active in scientific research. The results can contribute to strengthening the European research community.
