Platform of bioeconomy ERA-NETs Actions (PLATFORM)

PLATFORM is the forum for funders and programme managers in public-to-public partnerships in the areas that entail the bioeconomy. Through the FP7 Coordination and Support Action ‘Platform of Knowledge Based Bio-Economy relevant ERA-NETs’ PLATFORM has become a robust forum and offers mutual learning and networking opportunities to the ERA-NET actors, thus enhancing coordination and maximising synergies.
Platform of bioeconomy ERA-NETs Actions (PLATFORM)
The PLATFORM (Platform of knowledge based bio-economy relevant ERA-NETs) project brings together funders and programme managers in public-to-public partnerships in the fields that make up the bioeconomy: food, agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, forestry, climate, biodiversity and biotechnologies. Networks engaged are: ERA-NETs, ERA-NET Cofunds, JPIs, and Working Groups of the Standing Committee on Agricultural Research (SCAR). By organising activities and common outreach for the larger community of bioeconomy P2P actors, PLATFORM improves exchange, capacity building and cooperation. PLATFORM effectively increases interaction and collaboration between the networks resulting in a more coherent and harmonised environment for ERA-NET implementation.

PLATFORM was supported by FP7 in 2012-2014 and is currently supported for the period 2015-2017 by Horizon 2020. FP7 PLATFORM organised a set of various activities, starting in 2012 with small conference in Copenhagen mainly for consortium partners. In 2013 a conference was organised in Paris on ‘ERA-NETs in interaction’ and in 2014 a larger conference in Leiden on ‘ERA-NETs for the future’. Furthermore, a dedicated workshop on cost-benefit and a masterclass on call management were held. Besides organising meetings, PLATFORM performed desk studies and surveys to assess drivers and success factors of performance, interactions, and the role of ERA-NETs in European research policy. Conclusions and recommendations are described in a set of reports, for example on network mapping, on collaboration between ERA-NETs and the private sector, and on collaboration with international research initiatives funded outside Europe. At the last conference, a session was co-organised with the EIP-Agri Service Point and the DG for Agriculture and Rural Development to facilitate and encourage involvement of ERA-NETs in the European Innovation Partnership's (EIP) objectives. A book featuring a comprehensive overview of over 25 bioeconomy ERA-NET actions funded under the 6th and 7th Framework Programme was published in 2014.

The present project continues to build upon the successes of its predecessor. The activities include: Annual Events where network actors and other stakeholders discuss emerging cooperation needs, opportunities and tools and the impact of alignment; a World Café workshop focussing on new, sustainable models for cooperation between public research programmes; a Workshop on Inclusiveness; a Workshop on Evaluation and Monitoring; and two Masterclasses on ERA-NET Cofund organisation and management. The project also performs analysis and interviews to underpin its work, such as on inclusiveness providing research authorities from so-called ‘low-performing’ countries with training and guidance on how to get more involved. Furthermore an inventory of alignment actions will be made. Several Policy Briefs will be published to support and inform national programme owners and managers in their endeavours towards better coordination, consolidated P2P cooperation and inclusiveness of underrepresented Member States. The collection of information on ERA-NETs, their calls, and the projects will be extended from what was done in 2013. The repository will be made searchable on the website, and PLATFORM DB will be used for statistical analysis as requested by the funders and practitioners. The PLATFORM Office keeps the community updated through the website and the monthly newsletter.
