Aragon region vies for researchers and excellence

The ARAID Foundation (Agencia Aragonesa para la Investigación y Desarrollo) is a non-profit organisation established by the government of Aragon, an autonomous community in Spain, to promote research, development and innovation in the region. An EU-funded initiative was set up to help ARAID attract more researchers.

Over a five-year period and amidst financial strains, the project ARAIDEU (ARAID-European Union attraction of researchers and fellowship program) recruited 29 researchers over five calls. Information concerning the selection timetables and procedures for the calls are available on the ARAID website.

The overwhelming majority of the selected candidates chose public research institutes, including academic centres and small and medium-sized enterprises. The researchers were hired with fixed-term full-time contracts and effectively had the same rights and obligations as the personnel of their host institutions.

ARAIDEU researchers (42 % female, 58 % male) took part in dissemination and outreach activities, attended congresses and conferences, and prepared scientific publications. At the time of reporting, work had already resulted in the filing of two patents.

With an emphasis on fair treatment and aiming to provide stimulating and favourable working conditions, the project prompted a revision of ARAID human resources procedures. Marking a first for the Aragon region, related efforts earned the Foundation the European Commission's HR Excellence in Research logo in 2015.

Project work extended ARAID's existing programme by including mobility in efforts to attract and retain promising researchers. More than half of the fellows remained in the region, hired by either ARAID or host institutions in research and development positions.

ARAIDEU contributed to an overall improved professional life for its recruited researchers, strengthening at the same time ARAID's mission and region's diverse range of academic and professional enterprises. The undertaking also represents a long-term investment for science and knowledge excellence in Europe and beyond.
