Combined time domain and spectral domain coherence gating for imaging and biosensing

Final Report Summary - COGATIMABIO (Combined time domain and spectral domain coherence gating for imaging and biosensing)

Revolutionary combination of principles of spectral domain and time domain coherence gating have been researched. The activity planned researched: (i) a novel class of optical interferometers, (ii) a novel class of wavefront sensors and (iii) combinations of imaging channels with the novel wavefront sensors. All these are driven by the needs to address the limitations in terms of speed of the time domain (TD) optical coherence tomography (OCT), in terms of range, resolution and focus of the spectral (SD) OCT methods and in terms of spatial resolution of wavefront sensors. The ERC activity has: (i) lead to a novel spectral domain interferometry and to a spectral domain OCT method, (ii) lead to a novel akinetic tuneable laser, (iii) demonstrated depth resolved measurement of aberrations from scattering targets and (iv) proven working systems that can generate hundreds and thousands of en-face OCT images in real time from the eye and from tissue. It is expected that some of these achievements will be commercialised or lead to more developed research activities.
