Periodic Report Summary 1 - REFLEX (Re-thinking the fundamentals of vehicular networking with transportation theory and complex network science)

The ReFleX project aims at characterizing in a comprehensive manner the topological features of large-scale urban vehicular networks built on top of Direct Short-Range Communication (DSRC)-based vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication technologies.

During the first reporting period, the ReFleX project collected, generated and made publicly available a number of vehicular mobility datasets that comply with the requirements of networking studies. The datasets generated within the project are based on realistic O/D matrices and/or real- world traffic count measurements, which are fed to state-of-the-art tools for the simulation of microscopic vehicular mobility. Their realization involved devising state-of-the-art solutions to challenges in the integration of realistic data sources and mobility simulators. The mobility datasets represent the basis for a study of vehicular network topologies. To that end, the ReFleX project employed enhanced stochastic models to represent the shadowing induced by buildings and surrounding vehicles on the propagation of RF signal in V2V/V2I communications. It then proposed complementary approaches to model the vehicular network connectivity arising from the two most popular communication paradigms employed in vehicular networking, i.e., connected forwarding (as a set of instantaneous graphs) and store- carry-and-forward (as an evolving temporal graph). Complex network analyses of the resulting connectivity models revealed original properties of vehicular network topologies in urban and highway environments, including, e.g., (i) the poor network-wide instantaneous connectivity in both highway and urban settings, (ii) the limited availability, stability and navigability of instantaneous connected components, (iii) the dependence on two factors (communication range and road traffic density) of the instantaneous connectivity, (iv) the significant improvement granted by temporal connectivity over short time intervals.

The results achieved so far by the ReFleX project have significant potential for scientific impact. The dataset repository built and maintained by the ReFleX project can play an important role in fostering the reliability and reproducibility of research results in the vehicular networking field. The solutions devised by the ReFleX project for the generation of vehicular mobility datasets can be applied to any road traffic generation process, and thus ease the work of other research groups. The analyses carried our by the ReFleX project on the connectivity provide useful guidelines to the design of protocols and algorithms for vehicular networks. In addition, the results of the ReFleX project were disseminated at large, through publications appears in five journals, four conferences, one book chapter, one habilitation thesis, as well as talks and seminars at national and international venues.

Overall, the ReFleX project is having a good impact on the career development of the researcher. He holds a permanent position at the Host Institution, where is granted full autonomy in his research activities. The ReFleX project allowed him to establish a research group on mobility data generation and analysis, and to set up a number of collaborations at local, national and international levels, as demonstrated by joint publications.
