An electronic research tool for Indian philosophy

Conceptual and textual analysis are combined in a novel way to look at Indian philosophical texts.
An electronic research tool for Indian philosophy
Main works from the Indian philosophical tradition are known for their demanding and complex content. An EU-funded project, SV-RT (Sastravid - A new paradigm for the study of Indian philosophical texts), therefore developed a new approach. The aim was to provide an approachable means to the contents of Indian philosophical texts by merging information from both ancient and modern commercial works.

Structuring the texts, providing commentarial background info on them and linking them to other texts was a major part of the work. By linking the texts to themselves directly, it is easy to switch between philological and philosophical modes of research. The principles were encoded in a web-based electronic tool that was developed.

A textual component of the tool allows for the display of philosophical texts in various languages, including the original language. To date, resource materials are encoded in Sanskrit, Tibetan, Classical Chinese, English and German. The conceptual component of the tool consists of a structural format for the texts organised according to topics. Thus, the user can move seamlessly from the repository of content to the textual support.

This tool is now available on the project website. It will be especially useful for philosophical research.
