EU-US cooperation to boost research partnerships in European studies

Security and governance are the focus for many international institutions specifically focussing on European studies. An EU initiative gathered perspectives from several countries to establish a comparative outlook on these key global issues.

Several institutions in Germany, Turkey and the Unites States are tasked with gathering the know-how of experts to develop synergies between the various disciplines and resources in European studies. They are also creating joint activities and links with academic institutions in other countries.

The EU-funded EU-GLOBAL (Transatlantic perspectives in a changing global context: Multilateralism through regionalism) project helped to facilitate the transfer and exchange of knowledge and expertise between leading university centres involved in EU studies and subjects.

Researchers analysed how security and governance relate to each other by considering the evolving global situation and the long-term requirements and concerns of EU studies. They then gathered their findings to develop an integrated approach to these two research areas.

This was achieved through a mobility scheme that supported the exchange of early and experienced researchers between the European and American partners. In total, 28 researchers from five institutions carried out research with an international focus in the two areas. During the secondments, researchers held conferences, seminars, public lectures and organised workshops.

Project results were disseminated to various communities in Europe and the United States via research and network meetings, high-profile conferences, workshops and seminars.

By facilitating international research cooperation and leveraging new and existing networks, EU-GLOBAL helped to amass the knowledge and expertise needed to deal with security and governance issues at national, EU and global levels.
