Periodic Report Summary 1 - CROWN (Cross-layer Research on Green Cooperative Cognitive Radio Networks and Services)

• Summary Description of the CROWN Project Objectives:
The overall objective of the CROWN project is to accelerate the transfer and deployment of research knowledge between European countries and China in order to obtain better understanding of cognitive radio wireless networks and services in terms of various aspects such as energy efficiency/green, cooperativeness, and cross-layer design from both the physical layer and the upper layers of wireless networks. In particular, the transfer of knowledge, mainly as a result of researcher’s mobility, will focus on a new vision of green Cooperative CR paradigm or CCR. This new vision advocates the seamless integration of three important aspects of modern wireless communication systems, i.e., green, cooperativeness and cross-layer. It is the aim of this project to explore a systematic way to bring together these features into a CCR network so as to maximize its effective network throughput (excluding signalling overhead) while staying green. In the meanwhile, the design of the CROWN network architecture will also take into consideration the new trend of services (e.g., increasing more video streaming) and their provisioning mechanisms (such as SDN, NFV, cloud computing). Content-, user-, and context- awareness will be considered as much as possible to envisage a new CCR era where mobile network operators, service providers and end users all benefit. Our CROWN staff exchange programme will also help develop new research links and deepen and strengthen the current research links amongst the partners and help build up long-term, world-class research in this exciting new research field of future Green Cognitive Wireless Network technology.

• Work Performed Since the Beginning of the CROWN Project:
The CROWN project has organized two plenary meetings/annual workshops since the beginning of the project. All the project partners got actively involved in the project work programmes and these 2 annual workshops. All the planned project Deliverables (D1.1, D2.1, D3.1 and D4.1) had already been completed and been submitted successfully. WP2 has been successfully completed as planned. Currently, as planned, WP1, WP3 and WP4 are in good progress with all the planned objectives, milestones and technical goals had been achieved.

• The Main Results Achieved by CROWN Project So Far:
▪ Specifications of the new requirements for green CCR networks are obtained from across different network layers, i.e. in the cross-layer manner;
▪ Definition of two use cases scenarios are given that can reflect the essence of the CROWN objectives and solutions;
▪ Designs of the overall methodologies and green CCR network architecture are achieved;
▪ Coordination of the system design activities are carried for both WP3 and WP4 to ensure their smooth development and mutual interactions.
▪ D2.1 final deliverable has already been submitted to EC.
▪ Specification of green CCR physical and MAC layers modelling have been created;
▪ D3.1 – Interim Report on CCR Physical Layer Design had already been submitted to EC.
▪ Specification of green CCR upper layers design and modelling have been created;
▪ D4.1 – Intermediate Report on CCR Cross-layer Design had already been submitted to EC.
▪ The planned staff exchange activities are generally speaking well underway;
▪ A number of relevant research publications have been published/accepted by/submitted to the journals and conferences;
▪ The CROWN consortium members have organized two Journal Special Issues from our research and are to organize an International Research Workshop;
▪ Carried the industrial visits to the companies Rinicom Ltd and HW Communications Ltd;
▪ Offered the training and dissemination to the PhD, master and final year UG students and wide audience.

• The Expected Final Results and Their Potential Impact and Use: (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far).
The expected final results of the CROWN project are: 1) New cross-layer system and network architecture designs of green cooperative cognitive radio networks; 2) Energy efficient and cooperative physical layer protocols and modeling; 3) Cognitive upper layer protocols and modeling; 4) Testbed experiments evaluation. 5) High impact journal papers and conference papers. 6) Journal special issues and Conference/workshop organizations.

The CROWN project will have high impact and potential to impose strong strategic impact on the European markets of telecommunications/networks and information technology. With its research territory covering future energy-efficient communications network technologies and future mobile Internet, CROWN will help bring a new, cooperative and flexible green wireless communication infrastructure and services to the major stakeholders (mobile network operators, manufacturers, service providers and content providers) in Europe. This will significantly facilitate the development and deployment of such network infrastructure and its associated technologies in not only European countries but also other countries such as China. China has the world’s biggest telecommunication and network market, especially when the scale of mobile communications facilities and users are concerned. On the mobile communication front, China has its own broadband 3G and beyond standards, which has attracted almost every single major communication and network equipment vendor worldwide. On the fixed network front, China is also very active in standardisation such as IETF, ITU, etc. Fundamentally, China is too big a market to be missed out by Europe as far as the ICT (information communication technologies) is concerned. A people mobility project with China that is targeting this massive area of future green communications & mobile Internet is of great strategic importance to ERA.

In terms of the S&T impacts, CROWN proposes a paradigm where cross-layer cooperative cognitive radio networks are designed in an integrated and unified manner, aiming to provide users with energy-efficient services in a more flexible and cost-effective way than the current mobile Internet infrastructure can offer. This can help fundamentally improve the energy and spectrum efficiency of the current mobile and Internet infrastructure, encourage the creation of innovative and creative services, and ultimately achieve a green digital Europe. These changes will make impact on European ICT industries and provide them with more vigour to maintain their leading position in a very competitive world-wide ICT market.

In addition to its scientific & technological impact, the CROWN project also helps promote social and cultural exchange between EU countries and China. By hosting prestigious researchers from the very top research institutions in China (the biggest developing country in the world), the CROWN project also reinforces the future cooperation between the European countries and China. After the increased awareness and acceptance of European culture (exemplified in this Project by science and technology) by Chinese elites, a significant increase in S&T, economic and cultural cooperation will follow. This will eventually strengthen the EU research activities and benefit the European economy and societal welfares.
