Mid-Term Report Summary - TAQ (Taming non-equilibrium quantum systems)

Complex quantum systems out of equilibrium are at the basis of a number of the most intriguing puzzles in physics. This research project is concerned with unlocking the puzzles related to such quantum many-body systems that have been pushed out of equilibrium, in several ramifications of this research question. In this project period, signficant success was made on the question on how quantum many-body systems equilibrate and thermalise. Equally importantly, the dynamics of quantum phase transitions has been explored. A new direction of research entering the project was the fascinating and multi-faceted phenomenon of many-body localisation, which has been approached with new technical tools. More technologically speaking, it has been explored to what extent the findings can be used in research on quantum thermal machines. Also, a new machinery of performing tomography and assessing quantum many-body systems has been achieved. Maybe most importantly, serious foundations have been laid to complete the anticipated project in the second half of the project.
