Fibre composite elements for non-metallic reinforcement of concrete

Research was carried out in order to acquire fundamental knowledge and know-how on fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) application in civil engineering structures. The research involved the development of glass fibre reinforced plastics (GFRP), aramid fibre reinforced plastics (AFRP) and carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP). AFRP wires and CFRP wires with excellent mechanical properties were developed. The GFRP-rods represent a very suitable composite for tendons, structural ties and so on, for all such applications where the immediate contact of composite with alkaline aqueous fluids can be obviated. The DYWIDUR-system (GFRP) has been developed and first applications as rock nail in underground construction in Germany and Norway have shown the potential of the system. Because of the lack of experimental investigations of common FRP, the university partners were especially involved in materials research and testing. Different research programmes were conducted to study the materials behaviour of FRP and the structural behaviour of concrete elements reinforced or prestressed with FRP. A complete set of internal test standards were developed which may justifiedly serve as basis for internationally acknowledged test standards. The development of tendons, structural ties, stay cables and so on using CFRP received a strong input. Development of tendon-anchorage assemblies for CFRP was performed on basis of extensive theoretical and experimental studies. AFRP-tendons and anchorages were also developed and are available today for several admissible prestressing forces. Several applications proved the suitability of the system.
