Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Eciwind (Cost effective wind turbine of 40 kW of rated capacity)

Reporting period: 2015-05-01 to 2016-04-30

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

o Refine the design of the initial prototype in order to set the expected power performance of 40%.
o Blades decrease the weight 20% and increased resistance 30-35% to bending and breaking
o CAD design
o For wind velocities of 8 m/s, the rotor rotates at 120 rpm
o Turbine nacelle, blades and body frame manufactured with fiberglass and epoxy resin
Changing the concept of the generator to a fractional slot topology with concentrated coils, the main objectives would be:
o -Reduce the magnet volume by at least 10%.
o -Reduce the copper weight by at least 8%.
o -Obtain an efficiency greater than 90%.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far


o The rotor design objetive, sought to increase strength without increasing weight. This objective has been achieved, which has enabled safety standards on what makes the rules increases.
o Enair´s rotor security factor is FIVE times safest than IEC-61400 normative.
o The new design produce less turbulence in the small wind Specification
o The wind turbine was successfully installed and switched on to perform the preliminary tests in order to configure several aspects. During 5 days it was working qualitatively as expected until a peak was registered and the machine was stopped. After finding the problem, the solution was proposed and it is currently getting executed. This problem has left us with very little usable data but despite the unexpected setback that we suffered in the testing campaign, we have seen that the design is acceptable and it works as expected from the qualitative point of view: it starts, accelerates, supplies power, stops and withstands flag position properly.

Regarding 10 kw generator , main conclusion at the end of the task , it would be stated that the new design of the generator has been developed successfully. Concerning the performances the following improvements have been reached:
o The obtained efficiency is greater than 90% (90,5%).
o The generator’s active length has been reduce by 30% from 170 mm to 120 mm.
o The cost reduction in magnets is greater than 10% (10,2%).

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

o Seen the evolution of the prototype of 10kW, we think with an excellent product, which generates lots of energy and it is very safe , thanks to the active and passive systems developed . The result of this has been applied for patent prototype model . . Currently , this model has generated great interest among the Japanese market , since the surplus produced energy that can be purchased to 0.46 kw / h . This makes the investment product in this market through 7 to 3 years.

o Regarding generator design, at the moment with 10 kw prototype, we are on good way to achieve an efficient and competitive product in price for the market in to make it more attractive this option against low-carbon electricity.
