A greener carbon capture process

There is an urgent need to mitigate the increase in atmospheric carbon. Researchers have improved the process of carbon capture by closing important knowledge gaps.
A greener carbon capture process
The process of capturing carbon to reduce greenhouse gases can be vastly improved to lower risk and increase impact. This can be achieved through technologies to trap carbon dioxide (CO2) faster and prevent leaks from carbon capture and storage (CCS) more often.

The EU-funded CO2TRAP (Microbially enhanced geologic carbon capture, trapping and storage (CO2TRAP)) initiative aimed to develop efficient technology to improve carbon capture. The researchers studied the process of using carbonate-forming bacteria and biofilms for CCS.

CO2TRAP investigated how the biomineralisation process is affected by brine composition in reservoirs. It also investigated the effects of pressure on the biomineralisation process.

Project members wanted to determine how stable carbon minerals are under various brine mixtures in CCS reservoirs. They then up-scaled the process from the lab and took it to the field.

The researchers showed that carbon capture can be enhanced with carbonate-forming microorganisms and biofilms. CO2TRAP was therefore able to make the process of carbon capture more efficient and improve understanding of CCS processes.

The data produced will enhance the EU's ability to develop energy-efficient, low-carbon water and air treatment technologies. These technologies will continuously be developed through the 21st century for an environmentally sustainable future.
