Cutting-edge monitoring technology to meet the need for safe hydrogen storage tanks

Hydrogen is widely seen as a promising replacement in mitigating the negative environmental impact caused by carbon dioxide emissions from the use of fossil fuels. An EU initiative tackled the safety concerns associated with this renewable energy source.

Safety issues involving hydrogen use are mainly based on accidents and injuries that have already occurred during its storage and transport as a result of tank rupture. Existing solutions to mechanically protect the tanks, methods to assess hydrogen embrittlement during manufacturing methods or gas leak detectors are not efficient or cost effective. Furthermore, they cannot provide continuous monitoring to detect defects before they become critical.

With this in mind, the EU-funded SAFE H POWER (Continuous monitoring systems for the safe storage, distribution and usage of hydrogen power for transport) project designed monitoring systems to detect and locate defects in hydrogen-powered vehicles and large storage tanks.

Project partners developed three continuous monitoring systems based on acoustic emission (AE) and neutron radiography (NR) technologies. Round-the-clock monitoring ensures that all defects that could potentially cause leaks are detected early so as to prevent failure.

A low-cost AE sensor system attached to a vehicle hydrogen tank detects a signal that originates from any position in the tank wall. The system draws power from the vehicle battery and generates a dashboard warning when it identifies a defect that threatens the tank's structural integrity.

An AE array system for continuously monitoring large hydrogen storage tanks installed at service stations and production plants was built with an extended signal processing software. The software manages data from multiple sensors, uses the triangulation method to analyse data and accurately locates the defect position.

The third system, which uses NR technology, is able to detect flaws in a composite tank. However, it cannot completely image hydrogen tank defects. As a result, it remains unsuitable for commercial or practical applications at this time.

SAFE H POWER successfully addressed safety concerns and the market gap for an inspection system to monitor the start and growth of fatigue cracks in vehicle hydrogen storage tanks, at depots and all points in the hydrogen supply chain.
