Periodic Report Summary 1 - 3EMOTION (Environmentally Friendly, Efficient Electric Motion)

Project Context and Objectives:
As concluded from former FC bus projects is the breakthrough of FC Bus technology in public transport hampered by high FCB and HRS costs. These costs can only be reduced through the application of the economies of scale. That will be realised in FCH JU large scale bus projects from 2017 onwards. It is the 3Emotion project’s major objective to bridge this gap between former demonstration projects and the future large scale deployment. Through a targeted expansion in five key EU bus markets: London (UK), Flanders (B), Rotterdam (NL), Cherbourg (F) and Rome (I), the potential value of FC Buses and the related HRI’s will be demonstrated to key decision makers in public transport. Meanwhile, key information and experiences from daily FC Bus operations will be made available for all interested authorities and stakeholders. These will be actively spread towards well defined target groups to pave the road for the large scale deployment.

More specific, the project will focus on 10 major objectives:
1. a cost effective integration of FC buses in local bus fleets
2. ensure widespread visibility of FC Buses across Europe
3. further enhance technical availability of the buses
4. demonstrate the potential for full decarbonisation of dispensed hydrogen
5. develop common technical specifications for refuelling stations
6. demonstrate 10 year life of fuel cell buses
7. the development of a toolkit for the identification of a proper mix of incentives to support the market demand side
8. the consolidation of the European Clean Hydrogen Bus Centers of Excellence
9. the development a transferability plan beyond 3Emotion
10. the development an effective deployment strategy towards FCB and HRS commercialisation in Europe

Project Results:

1. Again a new generation of fuel cell buses
Bus manufacturer Van Hool has reviewed its former FC bus concept and defined a new bus structure and driveline architecture. That new architecture should make it possible to realise the specific project requirements for the 3Emotion project. This new modular driveline can be used in different bus types, as is foreseen for the 3Emotion project.

After 18 months of project, four buses are ordered, two 13m 3 axle buses by RET, the operator for the centre of Rotterdam and two 12m FC buses by LBSL, the public transport operator for the city of London (see also Figure 1). Both the sites of Rotterdam PZH and Cherbourg are in their final stages to place the order. It is expected that these buses will be ordered before the end of October 2016. The buses for Rome will be ordered by a new partner in the project, i.e. ATAC before the end of 2016. VVM De Lijn, the public operator of Flanders in Belgium needs to be replaced by another site due to the lack of co-finances from the Flemish government. The coordinator and partner Air Liquide have formed a task group to identify the most suitable site to replace VVM De Lijn.

2. 2 New refuelling stations are defined
In the 3Emotion project, refuelling infrastructure is present at Rotterdam and in London. A new refuelling infrastructure will be placed in Cherbourg and in Rome, and eventually an additional refuelling station in Oude Tonge near Rotterdam. The latter will be built outside the 3Emotion project, but might be used by the PZH buses operated by operator Connexxion.
The station in Cherbourg is an Air Liquide delivered refuelling station that refuels the vehicles from trucked in hydrogen delivered from chlorine industry in the port of Le Havre. The station in Rome refuels multi source hydrogen into the buses. This hydrogen is a mix produced by gasification, electrolysis and trucked in hydrogen. Both stations of Cherbourg and Rome are presented in Figure 2.
The new site that is looked for should have a bus refuelling station operational. This makes the list for potential sites to join the 3Emotion consortium shorter.

3. Data logging of theproject demonstrations
The demonstrations in the project will be closely monitored to evaluate the progress of the equipment performances from technical and economical viewpoint. Under the coordination of CEA the consortium defined a list of high level KPI’s that will be estimated from basic parameters that are logged both by automatic logging equipment and log books. Table 1 reviews these high level KPIs.

4. Project dissemination creates awareness
A dissemination plan is defined for 3Emotion. That plan identifies different dissemination target groups that are targeted with specific information messages to reach a dissemination level that is adapted to the dissemination groups since the objectives to reach are different from group to group.
The dissemination activities of the project have been initiated as well. Due to the absence of operational sites at this stage in the project, the dissemination mainly specifies on the creation of awareness for the existence of the project and Fuel Cell bus technology in general. During the first reporting period 11 life project presentations have been organised in Rome, Rotterdam, London and other locations. At the two major ones real life bus demonstrations as shuttle services were foreseen (see Figure 3).

Potential Impact:

At the end of the project, Fuel Cell bus fleets will be deployed in 5 different European locations. In total 21 new FC Buses and 8 existing refurbished buses will be demonstrated for 3.5 years in real life circumstances. The KPI’s to be realised are presented in Table 3
