Mid-Term Report Summary - PACART (Free space photon atom coupling - the art of focusing)

In the project ‘PACART’, focusing from full solid angle is exploited for the efficient coupling of light and matter, in particular a single ion. So far, coupling efficiencies of 14% have been achieved, as exemplified by shifting the phase of a coherent beam interacting with a single ion by 2.2°. Another example for efficient coupling is the generation of an optical dipole-trap for nano-particles, achieving a trapping performance close to the optimum one can possibly achieve by focusing in free space.
Besides extreme focusing, the project’s success relies on mastering various highly advanced technologies. Examples for recent achievements are the demonstration of a narrow-band single-photon source based on a whispering gallery mode resonator as well as the generation of bright squeezed vacuum – a quantum state of light with many advantageous properties.
