Mid-Term Report Summary - FORSIED (Formalizing Subjective Interestingness in Exploratory Data Mining)

Data is revolutionising our society, as a major source of knowledge about nature, life, society, culture, and individual behaviour. It is being gathered at unprecedented pace and at ever lower cost. Yet, while the potential of this accumulating wealth of data is widely recognised, it remains unclear how to most effectively extract the tremendous value it holds.

The FORSIED project aims to further our understanding of how this can be done. Its approach is distinctive from other research endeavours in focusing on the extraction of subjectively interesting information from data: knowledge and insights that are maximally interesting to the data analyst exploring the data.

The most important results so far have led to new approaches for exploring and extracting interesting insights from high-dimensional, relational, and otherwise complex data. Additionally, the research has led to original insights into how data can be effectively explored while safeguarding sensitive information of which the data may contain evidence, including (but not limited to) personally identifiable information.
