Mid-Term Report Summary - PANDA (Phylogenetic ANalysis of Diversification Across the tree of life)

The goal the PANDA project is to significantly advance our fundamental understanding of the processes that shaped the evolution of biodiversity, and thus explain present-day biodiversity patterns, across the tree of life. Toward this goal, we first developed a series of models that allow testing various evolutionary hypotheses from present-day data, as well as open-access software that make these approaches easily usable by the scientific community. Applying these models to large empirical datasets, we obtained a series of significant results. For example, we found that there are five main different ways for vertebrates to diversify, that evolution tends to be faster in cold rather than warm climates, and that competition shapes the evolution of resource use traits more than social traits.
