ALERT: advanced mounting of electronic components

The advanced component mounter (ACM) is a versatile new device capable of installing a range of surface-mounted components. It is suitable for both high volume production of complex circuits, or as a stand-alone machine capable of flexible production patterns. The key features of the system are: high speed and accurate placement of components, and a modular design that gives flexibility in production and enables upgrades.

At the heart of the ACM device is an H-shaped robotic component manipulator, which is driven by linear brushless direct current (DC) motors and mounted on a rigid honeycomb frame. Features of the manipulator include advanced control and calibration systems, with wear and temperature compensation devices. The manipulator holds up to four placement heads and two cameras; each placement head has force control units and automatic tool-bit changing. The machine features an innovative feeder system, with components being supplied from feeder trolleys designed to allow quick changeover of components. Flexibility of the system is enhanced by a user-friendly control system, which allows easy downloading of placement programmes.
