DECOR: managing the global factory

The Decentralized and Collaborative Production Management (DECOR) project has developed software that improves the management of manufacturing procedures, both within and between plants. The system makes use of advanced information and communication technologies to enable the use of decentralized and collaborative decision-making within existing organisational structures. The system helps reduce the time and costs of manufacturing and contributes to increased productivity.

The DECOR toolbox consists of a set of software modules and utilizes an open systems architecture. The software enables the construction of a decision-making system tailored to the needs of individual companies. Standard software components and communication facilities such as electronic mail can readily be incorporated. At DECOR's core is a decision-making subsystem (DMS). The DMS consists of a problem solving module for reacting to planning and control problems; a message management module that enables communication with other DMSs; and a domain modelling module which provides an interface with the underlying data from the operating environment. Taken together, a series of DMSs, operating within the DECOR framework, allow decentralized decision-making which is both independent and collaborative.
