Mid-Term Report Summary - HICCUP (High Impact Cross-section Calculations for Unprecedented Precision)

In general the aim of the project is to supplement best available theoretical predictions with all order results, either through a Monte Carlo, or through an analytic resummation.
The concrete main goals of the project are
- to develop a generic merging procedure that does not involve a merging scale and retains NLO accuracy of the individual calculations
- to develop a NNLOPS code for those processes for which NNLO results are available
- push the frontier of next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) resummations to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic level (NNLL), thereby achieving a considerable reduction of uncertainty for important final state observables.

So far it has been proven that, while the goals are ambitious, they are realistic. In fact a number of milestones have been achieved already. The first extension of the Minlo method, in its original form, to the case of a genuine underlying 2 to 2 process, with non-trivial virtual corrections has already been formulated. NNLOPS results for inclusive Higgs production, Drell Yan and associated Higgs production have already been obtained. A generic procedure to resum event shapes and jet rates at NNLL in the context of e+e- has been designed and applied to event shapes for which this accuracy had not been reached yet, and, first the first time, to jet rates. New global fits of alphas from NNLL+NNLO accurate calculations are now possible.
