Periodic Report Summary 1 - BIOSOCIOCOG (Oxytocin and Dopamine Interplay in Humans – on the Biology of Social Cognition)

The CIG awarded to me was essential for my integration in a Portuguese research institution as an independent group leader. Moreover, it allowed me to start a new research field in the institution, and in fact, in the country. With the support of my institution (iMM Lisboa) I have created a new facility with equipment to conduct interdisciplinary and cutting-edge human neuroscience research (functional MRI, EEG, eye tracking, etc). I have also opened the precent of conducting the first clinical study with pharmacological intervention (not a clinical trial), i.e. this CIG project. I have facilitated several important and new collaborations between the iMM and the university hospital in front, across different hospital departments including Psychiatry which whom we started a few other studies in parallel with the CIG. I have gathered a highly interdisciplinary team of biomedical engineers, biologists, psychologists and psychiatrists, including 3 current PhD students, 2 post-docs, 2 technicians and 2 MSc students – 2 of which are non-Portuguese experienced researchers from international well reputed EU centers. Although with an understandably long set up period – with bureaucratic, ethical, purchasing and study design delays – we are now conducting 5 main studies and have 6 publications in submission, and 7 published from previously existing data. I am extremely proud of my and my team’s achievements so far, and look very enthusiastically towards the future of our lab – and thankful for this present and inspiring CIG opportunity.
