Periodic Report Summary 3 - PHONICS (Positioning the nucleus for cell migration and muscle fiber function)

Cells are highly compartmentalized structures and the nucleus is the biggest compartment within cells. Skeletal muscle fibers are particularly interesting because they have multiple nuclei. Furthermore, multiple muscle disorders are associated with mispositioned nuclei in muscle cells.
During this project we are studying how the cell nucleus is moved and positioned in muscle cells and how this process is affected in different muscle disorders. Our work already allowed to identify how nuclear movement is affected in a muscle disorder and we are currently developing a system to identify drugs that can ameliorate or revert this muscle disorder.
