Periodic Report Summary 2 - IRBPOSTPRO2.0 (IRB Barcelona International Postdoctoral Programme 2.0)

IRB Barcelona is an independent, non-profit research institution engaged in basic and applied biomedical science at the interface between biology, chemistry and medicine. One of the main missions of IRB Barcelona is to provide young life scientists with the opportunity to do training and research in a unique and multidisciplinary scientific environment. It is in this context that the IRBPostPro 2.0 project started in 2013 to enhance structures and resources for researchers at postdoctoral level. We offer postdoctoral fellows an optimal scientific environment to prepare them on their journey to take up positions as independent scientists. The IRB Barcelona International Postdoctoral Programme has offered 15 two-year competitive fellowships, and 2 one year fellowships based on the Incoming mobility trans-national element. Fellows have been selected through an international committee of experts, ensuring transparency and equal treatment of all applications. The programme has been promoted internationally and applicants have received support throughout the selection process. Awardees are being helped and mentored for the duration of the fellowship period.
Three international postdoctoral calls (two ordinary and one extraordinary) with the correspondent selection process and incorporation of fellows have been organized. As a result, and for the time being, eight fellows finished already their fellowships at the IRB Barcelona laboratories. 7 fellows incorporated into IRB Barcelona laboratories within the 2015 call. An extraordinary call was organized in 2016 to cover one position not awarded in the 2015 call. This call offered two one-year fellowships, which should finish before the end of the grant agreement.

The three calls were published and disseminated in online recruitment services, scientific journals, posters and by email. The call was published on IRB Barcelona website:
Eligible Applications were evaluated by an International committee of experts, at a first stage remotely, on a second stage through personal and individual interviews. The evaluation of the applicants has been done following the evaluation criteria as reported in Annex I of the Grant Agreement.
Applicants were informed at every moment of the status of their application.
The selected fellows have been employed by IRB Barcelona in accordance to Spanish legislation and regulations, receiving the benefits of the Spanish Social Security system, holiday leave, special leave, lunch tickets. Additional funding to cover relocation expenses has also been provided.

Description of the main results achieved:
Three calls were organized. As a result, 73 and 74 applications in the first and second calls, respectively, were received. Of these, 65 and 58, respectively complied with the eligibility requirements. In the extraordinary call, 20 applications were received (15 eligible). After completion of the selection process, 8 fellows in the first call, 7 in the second call and 2 fellows in the extraordinary call incorporated into IRB Barcelona laboratories in 2014, 2016, and 2017, respectively.

*in the extraordinary call 2 fellowships of 12 month each have been offered in order for the fellowships to end before the end of the Grant Agreement.
