Development of aqueous base varnishes for use in interior woods

Exploitable results

The use of expensive organic solvent-based varnishes is widespread in the furniture industry, even for applications where the level of finishing required is not particularly demanding. This causes serious problems of health, safety and hygiene due to exposure to and inhalation of these substances. Moreover, the pressure on the environment of the pollution caused by the emission of solvents from such coatings during drying is very high. The project concerns the development of water-based varnishes with low solvent emission. Valuable insight into the raw materials was gained, however the product resulting from the project was not of a sufficient quality to be used on an industrial scale. Investment is required in production equipment (as the equipment is different to that for solvent-based products). At present, the water-based varnishes are not cost-effective, however with time and stricter legislation concerning the use of solvent-based varnishes, the cost-competitiveness should increase.
