COHEX-A new concept composite heat exchanger to be applied in high temperature industrial processes

High temperature recuperative heat exchangers do not currently exist for temperatures exceeding 1000 C or for a differential pressure above 10 bars. This project (COHEX) has developed an optimal design for a new composite heat exchanger for use in such harsh environments.

Many industrial processes involve conditions which are outside the application capabilities of high temperature recuperative heat exchangers. Excess heat from these processes is non-recoverable by conventional heat exchangers due to the high temperatures, very aggressive environments and large fouling potential that these processes create. This project involved the development of a shell and tube heat exchanger, involving the use of heat transfer enhancing devices which can be used to save wasted energy in industrial processes with a peak temperature in the range of 1500 C. The design is based on ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials which have both high thermal and mechanical properties. This innovative design has a wide potential application in various industrial processes such as chemicals, glass, metallurgical and waste incineration.
