A new generation of gas-solid sorption machines

The project, following on from a previous JOULE 1 project, aimed to further develop a new generation of solid gas-sorption systems. The project work would greatly improve the understanding of such systems, and would help identify the main barriers to main-stream manufacture.

If advanced heat-pump and refrigeration systems are to become viable, new manufacturing techniques for gas-solid reactors must be developed. This is particularly the case for systems involving anisotropic transfers by using expanded graphite, inserted graphite fibres, or thermal wave reactor transformations. All these techniques allow a high rate of internal heat recovery either in the thermal wave adsorbers or in the new multi-salt gas-solid reactive processes.
