Solar power module for large-scale applications

Large-scale applications of photovoltaic power modules often face the difficulties of high cost and poor reliability. This project has made significant progress towards the resolution of these difficulties through the extensive modification of existing systems.

If the application of large-scale photovoltaic (PV) power modules is to become wide-scale then their cost must be reduced and their reliability significantly improved. The aim of this project was to develop a PV power module of a size between 1 and 2.5 square metres suitable for large-scale applications, at reduced cost and with increased reliability. The main features investigated in the development of this modified power module were; the absence of junction boxes, the most cost: effective intermodule cabling for cost efficiency and reliability, a reduced number of bypass diodes in internal wiring, an optimal configuration of strings in parallel and simplified mounting techniques to reduce costs. The project also addressed the issue of improved encapsulation in order to achieve better insulation and less humidity penetration.
