REMINEL: a rural system for every minute electricity production based on a solar Dish/Stirling-hydride combination

Solar irradiation is intermittent, therefore problems arise with matching electricity supply with demand in the application of solar-thermal electricity generating technologies. The stand-alone pilot plant developed during this project makes a significant move towards addressing this problem as it combines the generating technology with a storage system which allows electricity to be supplied even when there is no solar irradiation.

The Dish/Stirling system, consisting of a parabolic concentrator and a Stirling engine is accepted as being the most efficient technology for generating solar-thermal electricity. The aim of the project REMINEL was to develop an efficient solar thermal electricity generating system for stand-alone grid connected power generation, in the range of 10 kW with low investment cost and negligible maintenance and running costs. To enable the production of electricity on demand, the system aimed to integrate the Dish/Stirling system with a hydrogen heat storage system consisting of two metal type hydrides. The basic principle is to produce electricity directly with the Stirling engine, storing the surplus when solar irradiation is available and releasing heat when solar irradiation is not available from the metal-hydride and the Stirling engine used to produce electricity.
